NGOReview Flights & Airports: HA 361 ITO-HNL

Despite being on the edge of a passing score for this sector, Hawaiian Airlines still gives me an overall positive image.  Perhaps, it's simply because it is "Hawaiian" and that I enjoy staying in Hawaii.  Plus, a very Hawaiian livery.  Again, this review was completed on this particular flight sector and on this particular date and time, so it doesn't represent my overall satisfaction of the airline.

Friendliness
Airport
At Check-in
·     Agent was looking at cell phone until I said “excuse me”
·     My boarding pass printed from the KIOSK showed “Seat: SEE AGENT”, and so I enquired the agent, but he advised to see agent at gate.  While I was trying to confirm that once more, he cut me off half way and asked the next customer in line to his spot
1
Inflight
·     Great smile!
·     A flight attendant offered assistance to PAX with luggage into overhead cabinet
4
Crew Announcement
Prior take-off
·     Warm, slow-paced, clear
·     Sounded sincere
·     Very Hawaiian style
After take-off
·     Could not hear a thing, PA volume too low under the old noisy B717 engines and cabin
3.5
Terminal Service
·     Accessible priority boarding available
·     Changed gate approximately 30 mins prior to boarding time
·     Delayed 40 minutes, but no announcements, no changes displayed on any FIDS or hold-room screens
2
Safety
·     Explained roles and responsibilities of Exit Row PAX in moderate pace – requested PAX to pay attention with good assertiveness
·     Safety demo clear, until engine start-up it totaled covered the PA voice and heard nothing regarding wearing vest and reviewing safety card
·     Checked seat belts twice, glanced through
3
Cabin Style
·     Bright & Energetic
·     Hawaiian background music
·     Clean overall, considering it was only about a 5 minutes turnaround for this inter-island flight
·     Usual seating cover style, no special pattern or prints on inner cabin wall
4
Inflight Food & Drinks
·     Complimentary Hawaiian juice, single choice
·     No purchase available, but reasonable for a 30 mins flight
4
Crew Uniform
·     Hawaiian style, casual-friendly
5
Inflight Entertainment
·     2 magazines per seat pocket, but one of which is entirely in Japanese – not sure if that is relevant as it is not a Japanese carrier, though yes there is a high Japanese population and tourist demand in Hawaii
·    Despite the short 30 mins flight, would add service enhancement if there are a few overhead screens, perhaps showing some sort of Hawaiian attractions, short news, or just something to look at

Score (Out of 5)

Friendliness
Airport
·    Boarding gate greeting: Polite manner with smile
5
Inflight
·    Polite manner with smile
·    Professional attitude
5
Crew Announcement
·    Pilot: Clear, good tempo
·    FA: Clear and polite, highly audible
5
Terminal Service
·    It was a mess during boarding!  Board by the “zone” that was printed on boarding passes, but started with front to back rows, creating jam and gridlock at jet-bridge and hold room.  Since entering the jet-bridge, it was about 10 minutes till we reached the door, a total chaos.  Normally, you want to board from back to front to avoid jams.
·    Smartphone App check-in, advanced seat selection available, app boarding pass available, but wasn’t available for HNL boarding
2
Safety
·    Politely asked Exit Row passengers for evacuation assistance.  Did not briefly go through what needs to be assisted, but rather just request to refer to safety instruction card.  Whether or not required by regulation, it would still be good to verbally go through with those passengers.
·    Video demo: Slight creativity with humour (Jenga @ turbulence, ha ha!)
4
Cabin Style
·    Blue!  Fairly Delta.
·    Leather seats, worn off easily as usual
·    Red pillow plus blanket on every seat – thank you for bringing back the good old complimentary supplies!
4
Inflight Food & Drinks
·    Complimentary Coke, Seattle’s Best Coffee, and mini snacks (only)
·    Purchase of other food and beverages available
2.5
Crew Uniform
·    Neat and professional
·    No unique or stylish designs
3.5
Inflight Entertainment
·    Overhead screens
·    One movie followed by Delta channel
·    Radio channels available
·    In-seat headphone plug available
·    For over 5 hours of flight, it’s better than many other US carriers, but it would be preferable to have individual in-seat entertainment systems.  Let’s make flying more pleasurable!
